Rosa Parks  was  born in 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Her father was  a carpenter and her mother worked as a teacher. At the age of two, her parents divorced . She moved  with her mum and her brother to her grandparents' farm. She first went to an Afro-American primary school (opened only 5 months a year). Then she attended  the Montgomery Industrial School for Girls, a private school that liberal-minded women from the Northern United States founded. She got  a job as a dress-maker, then she met  Raymond Parks and married  him. The couple settled in Montgomery. In 1943, they became active members of the American Civil Rights Movement and they both worked for the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of coloured People).​
