The island opened in1892 as an immigration centre and it closed in 1954.
Over 12 million Europeans arrived in America via Ellis Island.
Why did they move to America?
Many Europeans wanted a better life and considered the USA to be the
land of Freedom.
When people disembarked from the boats, they lined up, registered then
a doctor examined them. If they were healthy and their papers in order
they then continued their journey into America.
