The past simple and the past perfect

Complete the sentences with the past simple or the past perfect of the verbs in brackets.

o. No one liked Mr Hyde because he had done....... many bad things in the past. (like; do)

. 1 When Poole told Mr Utterson that Dr Jekyll couldn't see him, Mr Utterson was worried that something awful had happened  to his friend. (be; happen)

2 Dr Lanyon . looked very ill because he had had a terrible accident  (look; have)

3 Mr Utterson didn't understand why Dr Lanyon had used the word 'disappearance'. (not understand; use)

4 Mr Utterson wanted  to see Dr Jekylle because he hadn't spoken  to him since the 8th January. (want; not speak)

Explications :

past perfect ( had + participe passé ) c'est du 'passé dans le passé' , s'utilise pour évoquer une action antérieure à une action passée ( elle au prétérit )
