Since 2008, the UK city of Birmingham has encouraged residents to enroll in its "Be Active" scheme, which allows ordinary people living in the COMMUNITY to use local leisure services free of charge.
After OBTAINING a membership card, people can use leisure centers, school gyms, and private gyms across the city at certain times. Each leisure center offers at least one hour of swimming and an hour of gym time to: Be Active" members with exercise classes, badminton courts, and other FACILITIES also available in some centers.
Since the " Be Active" program was LAUNCHED in 2008, over 360,000 people have signed up for the scheme. However, these people are not your typical gym bunnies UNLIKE in private gyms, where the average age is normally 29, the average age of "Be Active" participants is 49. In addition, most participants have never been gym members, half are overweight, and a fifth consider themselves to be in poor health.
Such figures INDICATE that the scheme is reaching the people who need it most.
Officials also CLAIM that the scheme is reaching the people who need it most. that the scheme has increased demands for information about quitting smoking and adopting healthier LIFESTYLES.
City council STATISTICS for 2017 show that for every £ 1 (5 dirhams) spent on the "Be Active"scheme, £ 23 is saved in the health service. Other city councils have visited Birmingham to learn what can be ACHIEVED by helping ordinary people to get fitter. Perhaps your city has a similar program.
