Unit 2. City of Stars The Story of Hollywood Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California. It is famous around the world as a place where movies and television series are made. It has many different attractions such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Universal Studios and the famous Hollywood Sign. In the early 1900s, many major motion picture companies set up shop in Hollywood, a small town just outside of Los Angeles. Hollywood was a great location for filming because it was close to several settings including the beach. the mountains, and the desert. Also, the weather was generally good, allowing for outdoor filming year-round. Soon Hollywood became the centre of the filmmaking industry in the United States. At the beginning there were only silent, black and white movies, but soon, the studios made a major breakthrough by producing movies with sounds. During the Golden Age of Hollywood (from the twenties until the fifties) the main genres were movies such as westerns, musicals, comedies and epics (historical movies). During the seventies other genres became popular: rom com (romantic comedies), adventure, action and sci-fi (science-fiction). Hollywood continues to be the home of many historic and unusual points of interests such as The Charlie Chaplin Studios, The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Griffith Park, Paramount Studios and many, many others!
