RELAND SOUTH AFRICA Sheffield ENGLAND London MENYA Najrobi Homecoming I was born at Teyateyaneng Government hospital in a small town not far from Maseru, the capital of Lesotho, of a Sotho mother and a Xhosa father. My family is what could be called "modern nomads" The earliest journey I can remember is when we moved from Maseru to Gaborone (in Botswana) in 1976, shortly before the Soweto uprising. In 1979 we were packing again for Aberystwyth (in Wales). Then we left and went to Sheffield (in England) in 1980. In 1982, my brother, sister and I were put on yet another plane to go to South Africa. My parents called it a "re-orientation programme". We were African children but we spoke English with Welsh accents. We were becoming unable to speak our mother tongue! We also loved the punk rock music. I didn't dislike our years in Britain. I loved Wales. I loved the little, old ladies who sat along the beach across from our flat. I loved the way they taught me Welsh and told me about the war. Most of all, I loved the green vegetation and the picnics by the streams Sheffield and I never hit it off too well. I enjoyed the parks, cinemas and restaurants in Sheffield, but the English seemed so cold and unfriendly compared to the warm-bearted Welsh Anyway, we left the United Kingdom and Sew to South Africa. Our first and last stop was Nairobi (Kenya). Añer a few days in Nairobi, we were on our way home. When the plane landed, we all tried to squeeze out the door at once. It is very difficult to express our feelings. We were home. Do you know the deep feeling of belonging xy out 5)
