Rosa Parks
Rosa Parks was born on February 4, 1913. She grew up in
Montgomery, Alabama. When Rosa Parks was growing up, the
United States was still largely segregated, which means people
were separated from each other based on their skin color or
race. White people and Black people didn't share things like
schools, drinking fountains, or even seats on a bus. Laws during
this time supported segregation. Some people felt that "separate
but equal" was okay. Many people did not support segregation.
On December 1, 1955, Rosa was riding a bus home from work.
She was sitting in the back of the bus in the section reserved for
Black people. If the bus got too crowded, the bus driver would
make Black people stand so white people would have seats. On
this particular day, the bus became too crowded, so the bus
driver told Rosa to move. She refused and, as a result, the police
were called to arrest her. They said that not giving up her seat
was against the law.
ANKES
Many people were angered by this injustice and boycotted the
buses in Montgomery until Black people were treated fairly.
Eventually, the Montgomery bus system allowed Black people
to sit wherever they liked on the buses. This was a start to
the civil rights movement and a small step in the direction of
justice for all races.
