The Senegalese national football team won their first and only African Cup of Nations (AFCON) trophy on February
6th, 2022. They defeated Egypt in the final on penalties. Composed of superstars like Sadio Mane named Best Player
of the Tournament and Edouard Mendy named best goalkeeper, Senegal overcame Mohamed Salah's Egypt 4-2 in a
penalty shoot-out at Sunday's final at Olembe Stadium in Yaounde. The match finished goalless after extra time.

After two preceding final defeats in 2002 by Cameroon and 2019 by Algeria, Senegal finally gained their first Cup
of Nations title. After the first stage, Senegal overcame Cape Verde 2-0 with one nice goal by Sadio. Then Senegal
silenced Equatorial Guinea 3-1 in the quarter-final. In the semi-finals, they defeated Burkina Faso 3-1 with Mane
again scoring a superb goal. Mané has scored three goals during the tournament. Other decorations of the competition
were given to Egypt goalkeeper Mohamed Abou Gabaski named the best player of the final. Cameroon's Vincent
Aboubakar named the Golden Boot with his eight goals.
Senegal's President Macky Sall declared the day of Monday 7th a public holiday to celebrate and welcome the national
football team on their return to Dakar. The next day, the President decorated the Lions of Teranga in the presidential
palace and offered each lion 50 million and two houses in the presence of all the nation.
