TEXT N° 2: THE IMPORTANCE OF TREES Trees are good for people, animals and the environment. They clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide, retain water and soil, and give shade. Trees give people food, medicine and wood. They also give homes and foods to birds, insects and small animals. Trees do a lot of good to the soil. Their roots help them in position so that rains will not wash them away and their lives and branches fall to the ground, rot and add to the good structure and fertility of the soil. The massive falling of trees can affect the environment, people and wildlife. With the massive falling of trees the birds, animals and insects that live in them have their homes destroyed. The inevitable result of this is that there will be fewer animals and birds because there is nowhere for them to live and find their food. The absence of trees causes the soil to suffer erosion and become barren. The soil that is washed away fills irrigation channels and rivers causing floods. Finally, the massive falling of the trees deprives people of medical herbs. It can also lead to a change in climate with the consequence like prolonged droughts. Let's protect our environment by planting and protecting trees.
